Hagar Easy fit sensors offer more control:

Hager has launched a new range of occupancy sensors that are easy to install and programme.

They combine occupancy sensing with a photocell to switch or dim lighting in response to both movement and natural light levels.

They are available as flush or surface mount, offering standard or digital lighting control. They can also be supplied prewired.

The digital range will auto detect either DSI or DALI and can control up to 24 digital ballasts. Installers can use them with or without the company's Klik lighting distribution system.

To install, the contractor simply pushes the sensor through the ceiling aperture and reverse springs then hold it in place. This makes it simple to install in a plasterboard as well as a grid ceiling. A sliding cover on the surface of the sensor allows access to its controls without removing it from the ceiling. www.hager.co.uk

It is a recommendation of the HSE given in guidance note GS38 that voltage indicators  should be proved before use and after use.

Test Lamps and some voltage indicators may fail to danger, e.g. a faulty lamp not indicating a live circuit. New Di-Smart steel armoured cable stripping tool:

Birmingham-based DiMart has introduced a steel armoured cable stripping tool that can cut into both the outer insulation and the protective steel strands underneath both circumferentially and longitudinally.

The SACS tool (steel armoured cable stripper) provides a fast, safe and accurate alternative for electrical engineers, many of which still use the traditional method of hacksaw and sharp knife.

"I wanted to develop a product that would eliminate mistakes and reduce injuries," explains Martin Barrett, managing director of DiMart and a certified electrician, who came up with the concept of SACS while working on theatre lighting grip installs. "I looked at what products were already available but none offered an ‘all in one' solution."

Di_smart

The tool works by first performing the circumferential cut on the insulation and steel strands, it is then rotated 90° to permit cutting of just the insulation in a longitudinal manner to allow the cable to be terminated via the use of a gland. Appropriate for cable diameters ranging from 12mm to 35mm.

Green energy awards announce UK winners

On 1 July at the Royal Geographical Society, low carbon energy champions from all over the globe were recognised at the 10th annual Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, the green energy awards.

Businesses, schools, local authorities and charities were among the UK winners, all of whom have made significant carbon savings through the use of renewable energy or energy efficiency measures. The overall UK Gold Award winner was the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust for their achievements in cutting energy consumption and devising an electricity capping system, dramatically reducing household carbon emissions by nearly 50%.

The Ashden Awards champion and reward life-changing ideas: from smokeless stoves in Ethiopia, to green schools in the UK, to solar powered education in Bangladesh. Six UK and six international projects were chosen as winners and received their awards from internationally-renowned natural history filmmaker Sir David Attenborough. Award winners received £10,000 or £20,000 to invest in future sustainable energy work.

Sarah Butler-Sloss, founder director of the Ashden Awards, said: "Our winners demonstrate how local sustainable energy can not only help save the planet, but also transform communities across the UK by creating jobs, regenerating communities, tackling fuel poverty and educating our future citizens to live sustainably".

David Attenborough said: "These award-winners are champions at delivering practical ways of protecting our planet and its precious biodiversity through the use of sustainable energy. They are reducing carbon emissions and protecting local eco-systems, whilst improving the lives of the people they touch. They deserve to be celebrated for their important role in tackling both climate change and poverty. "

11 million metres of defective cable exposed:

An Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) investigation has led to more than 11 million metres of cable manufactured by Turkish company, Atlas Kablo, being recalled from the UK market, following the suspension of two of its product certification licences.

The suspension by Basec (British Approvals Service for Cables) on 17th May of Atlas Kablo's product certification licence has been followed this week by the announcement that Atlas Kablo's HAR scheme certification licence for H05VV-F flexible cables from the Turkish Standards Institution, TSE, has also been suspended. TSE is still to advise about the quantities of cabling involved in the latest suspension.

Reports of faulty cabling from concerned contractors earlier this year led the ACI to test samples of product from the Turkish cable manufacturer. The samples were found to have insufficient copper leading to high conductor resistance and did not comply with appropriate British Standards. Independent testing by Basec later confirmed the ACI's findings and led to the suspension of Atlas Kablo's Basec licence for a serious decline in quality across its range of products.

Defective Cable

Atlas Kablo (Atlas Kablo Sanayi Ticaret Anonim Sirketi) which supplies a number of UK cable distributors and wholesalers with PVC house wiring, flex and conduit wires has confirmed the existence of the problem and the suspensions. Basec has advised all in the electrical supply chain that affected cable should not be sold or installed.
The company is required by Basec to investigate and rectify the problem and to assist the market in locating and recovering affected product through the supply chain for scrapping. Atlas Kablo has listed on its website batch numbers of products known to be affected at this time by the Basec suspension and distributors are urged to inform their customers. They have a 2010 manufacturing date and are marked with the manufacturer's identification `Atlas Kablo'.

Nuclear Plant to create thousands of jobs:

One of the UK's leading energy firms has unveiled plans to build the country's largest nuclear power plant in the south west of England.

EDF Energy will invest £500 into the construction and operation of the site at Hinkley Point, with at least 500 firms handling contracts to build the twin reactors.

The project is also expected to create 5,000 jobs during the construction process, while 900 permanents jobs will be up for grabs for the plant's 60-year operation.

In addition, the London-based energy supplier will help the local community prepare for the new employment opportunities by developing a specialist skills centre in Sedgemoor and an apprenticeship skills hub in West Somerset.

Nuclear Plant

Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson, managing director of nuclear new build at EDF Energy, said: "There are major opportunities not just for local companies such as builders, plumbers and electricians, but also for support services such as caterers, hoteliers, car hire firms and trainers."

Last month, the Electrical Contractors' Association launched a new development training scheme aimed at electricians looking to further their careers.
The initiative offers industry-specific management training to provide the electrical maintenance sector with its future leaders.
