Innovation Award for NG Bailey
NG Bailey’s Solais House building, at Strathclyde Business Park, was last night awarded a coveted Innovation Award at the British Council of Offices National Awards Ceremony held in London.

The company scooped the award for the development of its Scottish HQ, which has both an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) grade ‘A’ and BREEAM Excellent rating. The judges felt that although certain individual elements of the design were very impressive, it was the all round thinking behind the development of the project that made it worthy of being crowned the winner.
Solais House was up against three other buildings, from regions across the UK - Great Portland Estate’s 160 Tooley Street – London, BDP’s 11 Ducie Street - Manchester and Defra’s Project Zebra building in Northumberland.
Every year, the cream of UK corporate real estate gather to celebrate the very best in excellent office space at this awards ceremony. One of the BCO's primary objectives is to define excellence and provide public recognition for top quality design and functionality and a benchmark for excellence in workplaces.
Colin Walker, managing director of NG Bailey’s Scottish operation, comments on the win: “We are very proud to have been selected as winner of the BCO’s Innovation Award. This is a nationally recognised event and winning the award has allowed us to prove to the UK’s construction and property elite what can be achieved in terms of sustainability, even on a standard plan office build, when a partnership approach to construction is taken.”
Stephen Lewis, development director at HF Developments, added “We are delighted at the well earned recognition Solais House has received from the BCO. From inception throughout the development process, we worked very closely with NG Bailey to develop their innovative office. Since completion we have continued to incorporate many of the technologies used in the build into our expanding portfolio.”
The BCO acknowledges innovation and focuses external attention on examples of best practice, which fits seamlessly with NG Bailey’s ongoing drive to breathe innovation into all its projects, whether for its own estate or that of a client.

New Fluke 233 Remote Display Multimeter on the Market
Fluke 233 Remote Display Multimeter with detachable wireless display improves safety and increases productivity.

Fluke has introduced the industry’s first digital multimeter with a detachable wireless display. The new Fluke 233 Digital Multimeter (DMM) uses a wireless transmitter to immediately send measurements to the detached display, improving safety and increasing productivity for industrial and commercial electricians and electronic technicians.
The Fluke 233 Remote Display Multimeter gives users ultimate flexibility in difficult test situations. By simply sliding the wireless display out of the meter body, the user can place the display where it is most easily seen, up to 10 metres from the point of measurement, while putting the meter in the best position to take measurements. The low-power, 2.4 GHz-ISM Band wireless signal that transmits measurement data is resistant to electromagnetic interference.

The radio transmitter automatically turns on when the display is removed from the meter and off when the display is re-attached. The removable display is magnetic and has a flat bottom, so it can be conveniently mounted or placed on a flat surface where it can easily be seen. When the display is attached, the Fluke 233 operates as a conventional multimeter.
The Fluke 233 will measure up to 1000V AC and DC and up to 10A. It offers a 10,000 microF capacitance range, measures frequencies to 50kHz and captures min/max and average readings automatically. It features a 6,000-count display and includes a built-in thermometer that enables users to take temperature readings easily without carrying a separate instrument. An auto-off feature maximises battery life. The Fluke 233 is safety rated for use in CAT IV 600V/CAT III 1000V working environments.
Designed for both convenience and safety, the Fluke 233 makes it easier to take measurements in hard-to-reach places, or make measurements in machines or panels that are physically separated from a limit or isolator switch. It is ideal in areas where the operator cannot be close to the active measurement point, like clean rooms or hazardous areas. Making measurements without holding the meter can help users improve their visual focus on their test probes and work more safely.
The detachable wireless display lets the user:
Find a comfortable position to view and record test data, even when the test location is hard to reach or in a dirty or noisy environment.
View readings when the test point is across the room, or in the next room.
See test results even when the meter is hidden behind an equipment enclosure.
Run tests and read results at a safe distance from shock and arc flash hazards, moving machinery and other dangers.
Separate the tasks of positioning the meter and reading test results, so the user can devote full attention to each job and work more safely.
The Fluke 233 Remote Display DMM is available from Fluke authorised distributors and wholesalers.
ECA says... ‘Construction sector 'edging toward recovery'

The construction industry is slowly heading towards recovery, according to one expert.
A spokesperson for the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT), explained that after a period of decline there are finally some positive signs for the sector.
He said: "There has been a very small increase in private house building, but these are only currently very small and tentative steps."
Although there has been a slight increase in the number of workers being made redundant or temporarily laid off in recent months, the decline is much smaller than the one seen last year, the representative pointed out.
For this reason, the increase should prove to be nothing more than a "temporary blip in the recovery of the industry".
Yesterday, Costain revealed that its order book has now hit a record high of £2.7 billion.
According to the firm, it is very optimistic about its ability to meet its future goals.

IET event to help Engineers wanting to become Consultants
Engineers who are considering becoming their own boss will be able to hear from those who have successfully taken the plunge and become consultants at a seminar to be held in Bristol on Saturday 7 November.
The all-day event is being organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Consultants’ Network and South West Region. It follows on from successful evening events in Swindon, Cheltenham, Yeovil and Bristol earlier in the year.
Those attending will hear from practising consultants who will share their knowledge and experiences and offer tips and suggestions on becoming a successful consultant in the world of engineering.
Keith Parr, Chair of the IET Consultants’ Network, said, “Current economic conditions mean that more and more engineers are considering going it alone as consultants. We want to share the skill and expertise of the IET’s Consultants’ Network with those who are considering this as a career option to ensure they are aware of the necessary decisions that must be taken before taking the plunge.”
The event, which takes place from 10.00am until 5.30pm on Saturday 7 November, will be held at Engineers House, The Promenade, Clifton Down, Bristol, BS8 3NB.
Attendance is open to all and registration is £50.
